Introducing... Dudley Young Carers

DDudley Young Carerudley Young Carers

Dudley Young Carers offers support to young carers aged 8 - 18.

Young carers can contact the service themselves or can be referred by their parents or someone who knows them, for example a teacher, social worker or health professional.

Dudley young carers employs experienced, friendly staff who meet with the young carer to find out what support or activities would best suit their situation. Young carers may choose to attend the regular activity sessions run at Stourbridge Children and Families Centre. We have sessions for younger and older age groups on different nights. They can also join the Young Carers Committee and help to plan activities and events. Some prefer to talk with a worker one to one.

There are so many different things that Dudley Young Carers have done, it's impossible to list them all - so here's just a few:

  • canal boat trips in half term
  • attending the national young carers festival
  • representing young carers in the 'Hearing unheard Voices' conference
  • silent discos
  • sexual health workshops
  • ice skating

One young carer described the service as 'giving me space and time to be me'.

Emily's Story “Get decision makers to listen to you!”

Emily

Being a part of the HUV Steering Group has given me so many opportunities to talk about my campaign to promote the early identification of young carers in schools.

Speaking atUK Youth’s AGM and more recently the HUV Roadshow in the west midlands, has improved my confidence and ability to talk to the people who make the decisions and influence them massively.

The Roadshow was a fantastic opportunity for us to be able to share our experiences with other young people, and decision makers in our local community and get them to understand our experiences, By getting decision makers to take note of the recommendations we have I am actually part of improving youth services for young people affected by the care system in the West Midland regions.
