Introducing... Heartbeat Communiversity
Empowering in-need young people to achieve their aspirations!
Heartbeat Communiversity is an award-winning Southwark-based organisation empowering in-need young people and families across London. We channel the energy, talents and aspirations of marginalised and disadvantaged young people, families and communities to bring about social and neighbourhood renewal. Our approach is not just to help people but to enable them to improve themselves, their own families and communities and so bring about long-term change. One of our key strengths is our proven ability to engage the most marginalised and disenfranchised young people and families, and work with them so that they are able to sustain long-term change in their own lives.
We do this by providing a service portfolio spanning education, training, arts, sports, health and social care. Our current portfolio of services includes:
Higher SATs 4 All
A 12-week intervention programme that helps underperforming, challenging and at-risk primary and secondary school students to attend school more, achieve more and avoid exclusion and underachievement. The programme has worked with over 2000 pupils in over 40 schools in 7 London Boroughs. The programme has been evaluated to have contributed to reductions in exclusions, reductions in local crime and improvements in exam results/school league tables for participating schools.
Junior Academy
An extracurricular arts, sports and self-development programme for 10-13 year olds. Together with the Academy Plus the programme has attracted almost 1000 young people. As well as some of the elements of the Academy Plus programme the Junior Academy also provides arts and crafts classes and special outings for the young people.
Academy Plus
An extracurricular arts, sports and self-development programme for 13-19 year olds. Currently funded by the DCSF through the YSDF programme. The Academy Plus provides weekend activities (Friday/Saturday evenings) including Football, Basketball, Non-Contact Boxing, Self-Defence, Funky Fitness, Dance, Drama, Vocal Training and Digital Media classes at the high-class facilities of Charter School in Dulwich.
Keys To Success
A 1-on-1 keyworker support service for the most vulnerable of young people such as those in care or young offenders. The service was relaunched in late November 2009 after a temporary cessation of funding and as of early February 2010 is already supporting over 40 young people on a 1-to-1 basis for 5 or more hours per week. Keyworkers support young people into positive activities and help them to address their vulnerabilities in 10 key areas as defined through the ONSET model. Referrals come from social services, the Alternative to Care Team, the Young Carers Team, local secondary schools and more.
NEET 2 Elite
A qualification-based programme helping Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET) 16-18 year olds to get back into education or into work. The service has a very high rate of placements for young people and has been purchased by local authorities (Croydon Council, Southwark Council) and other third-sector agencies (including Kid’s Company). The programme currently delivers on a weekly basis in Southwark and Greenwich.
Youth Empowerment Now!
An award-winning programme for turning marginalised and disadvantaged young people into leaders, managers, entrepreneurs, community influencers and youth sector contributors. Awards include the 2008 Greater London Enterprise Award for Outstanding Contribution to Community, the Diana Certificate of Excellence Award (2009) and 7 Southwark Star Awards for individual members.
Our Minds, Our Hearts
A preventative mental health programme working with vulnerable young people at St Michael’s School in Bermondsey.
More Power 2 You
A programme for disadvantaged parents providing life coaching, parenting skills training and social networking opportunities. Featured by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) as an example of excellent practice in the 2007 publication ‘VCS Engage’ and as a model of best practice at the 2009 Children England conference on ‘Engaging Marginalised Communities’
