Save The Streets

January 1, 1970

Official figures suggest that violent crime in England and Wales has risen over the last year. The UK Home Office says reports of crimes such as robbery, wounding and racially-aggravated assault have jumped, while detection rates by police forces have decreased. However, the British Crime Survey, which interviews people to find their experience of crime whether they reported it or not, suggests a 22% fall in those same violent offences. The bottom line is young people do not feel safe in their local areas anymore.

Campaign Aim

More crimes are committed against teenagers than any other age group; Young People have the right to feel safe in their local areas, Solace are campaigning for more visable deterrents in and around London to reduce crimes against young people.

Help Young People Stay Safe on the Streets

Here are some things Young People can do to keep safe on the streets:

  • Stay alert, and keep personal stereos/MP3 players turned off, so you can hear what's going on around you
  • Stick to busy, well-lit roads, and avoid short cuts through alleyways
  • If you think someone is following you, you should cross the road or go to a place with lots of people around, like a bus stop or shop
  • You could carry a whistle or shrill alarm around your neck or on a key chain to warn off suspicious strangers
  • When travelling by bus, you should try to use bus stops on busy roads
  • If someone tries to take something from you, never fight them
  • Keep mobile phones and other valuables out of sight, and turn off the mobile phone ringer to avoid attracting attention
  • Don't carry weapons because they are more likely to be used against you, and it's illegal
