Speaking Up Youth Parliament, Nottingham, Challenge their local council over accessible timetables

Accessible Timetables is challenging the barriers that surround public transport in the Nottingham area – with a particular focus on the needs of young people with learning disabilities.

The Campaign has responded to barriers that the members of Voiceability face when using public transport timetables: These are identified as trhe following:

  • Use of long words making it hard to understand
  • No colour codes
  • No symbols or pictures to make it easier to identify
  • Writing is always too small making times hard to read
  • There aren’t always electronic boards at bus stops

Campaign Message

Voiceability members want young people to know that that they can make changes to improve the services that they access. They want young people with learning disabilities to be able to access public transport information like everybody else. They would like to see improvements being made to timetables in the following ways:

  • Symbols being used as well as writing
  • Big writing and easily understandable words
  • Colour codes matching timetables to the colour of the bus.

Results

Members of Voiceability met with council members to tackle the issue of timetables and to discuss how they could work together to make them more accessible to people with learning difficulties.

Council members pointed out that timetables can be requested in large print already but have agreed to hold further consultations with Speaking Up to see how they can improve them more in the future.
